We started in the Pedigree world of Beef Shorthorn's in September 2002 after looking for a native breed with excellent mothering abilities and great temperament whilst still retaining commercial attributes, which would work in our situation having a young family and thousands of tourists through the farm each year, whilst still doing well in the harsh climate of a Lake District farm.
Our first consignment of stock came from the Thirsk sale, with cattle from Ballard/Moreby herds.
We soon got the bug and after a spot of Caroline internet shopping more stock followed from the Wenmar dispersal.
After a few days away in the South of England we came back a little poorer but 11 head of cattle richer with stock from the Derryage / Podehole and Croxtonpark herds.
During the following few years we realised that the Shorthorn’s exceeded our expectations in all ways and subsequently we purchased stock from Chapelton, Tarrant, Glenisla & Holmeere, herds.
It was at that point we decide to move to all Pedigree Beef Shorthorns of which we calve around 35 today.
Our selection of herd dam was not only on the bloodlines but also sound and correct in locomotion, average size and good confirmation and structure.
During our first few years we had Convalley Sorcerer whom left long frame cattle. Muscle and confirmation was added to these with Croxtonpark Ken - a son of Podehole Rambo. More latterly we have used bulls to add thickness and ease of fleshing with Podehole Atlas & Holmeere Hulk.
All this has been complement with us of AI sires where we felt that they would suit particular cows. Holmeere Alistair/ Winalot Rodney, Cavans Bourbon. Our present Stockbull is Redhills Challengar a son of Northstar whom we hope will bring us faster growth rates and bigger mature cow size.
Sales & Shows
We are trying to produce good quality breeding stock which we sell privately and at Society sales. Over the last 8 years we have had success in the sales ring with leading prices at Thirsk/Skipton and Carlisle Society sales for both Yearling and 2 year old females.
Even though time is of a premium in the summer months we have managed to fit in some showing. With winning prizes at local shows to the Highland and former Royal Show, our own stock pinnacle was with Sandwick Zatsit Irene taking reserve female champion at the Royal Welsh.
However stock that we have breed and sold have gone on to win the Female Champion at the Yorkshire Show – Sandwick Duchess Zoe and Sandwick Celtic Rose winning the female champion at Dumfries Show.
The herd has been a member of Biobest herdcare scheme since 2005 we annually blood test for BVD & Johnes stock are all vaccinated for BVD , IBR & LEPTO with the herd gaining Johnnes Acredition in 2007.
